Summertime Frozen DIY Dog Treat Recipe

What does summer mean to us? Among other things, ICE CREAM!

One way to create your own healthy dog-approved frozen dairy treat is by using nonfat yogurt (no added sugars) to fill natural Best Bully Sticks dog treats. Upgrade this treat even more with colorful fruit, like strawberries, pineapple, banana- your call!

What we used from BestBullySticks.com:

Cow Hooves (the full ones, not split)

Trachea- Choose from 3, 6, and 12 inch varieties or the Grab Bag with an assortment of lengths.

What we purchased at the grocery store:

Best Bully Sticks natural filling for dog treats

  • Canned pineapple tidbits (alternatively, you may use Crushed pineapple)
  • Fresh, washed strawberries cut into small pieces
  • Nonfat plain yogurt* (not vanilla, as this has added sugars that are not good for dogs)

* If your dog does not tolerate dairy, unsweetened soy milk yogurt may be substituted.

Other suggestions for tasty fillers:

Fruit: Blueberries, apple, banana, cantaloupe, raspberries, peach, plum, dried or fresh unsweetened coconut.. the list goes on!

Natural Peanut Butter & Bully Flakes

Natural Peanut Butter & Bully Flakes

Other fillers: Peanut butter, Carob Chips (NOT chocolate), Bully Flakes, sweet potato, or honey*.

*Just a little bit, as dogs should not consume a lot of sugar.

If cutting up stone fruits, be sure to not include any pit in what you feed your dog. Peach and plum pits contain cyanide which, if broken open, can be toxic to dogs. Also avoid grapes. While they may seem like a fun frozen (or fresh) snack for dogs, grapes and raisins can be toxic as well.

Directions

IMG_1619After cutting your filler ingredients into small pieces or processing it in a blender or food processor, simply mix with your yogurt base and use a teaspoon to spoon into your trachea and/or hooves treats. Place in the freezer for 1 hour or more. When ready to treat your dog, remove from the freezer and let him or her enjoy!

It should be noted that cow hooves possess what many consider a pungent order. For that reason and the fact that these treats will melt, you may wish to give your dog these treats outside on a deck or in the grass.
