Weekly Drool Recipe: Lemon-Lavender Biscuits

It’s spring and that means the occasional thunderstorm.  A good spring rain can refresh the earth and feed your newly planted veggies and flowers.  But, Best Bully Sticks knows that sometimes our pups don’t like the loud booming of thunder. An anxious dog tugs at our heart stings and as proud pooch parents, we want to help calm our dog’s nerves.

That’s why this week we’re bringing you a special treat from our friends at Doggy Dessert Chef! These Lemon-Lavender Biscuits are made with culinary lavender found easily on the Internet or your local spice shop.  Lavender has a calming effect by way of a dog’s olfactory system (nose) and has been proven to be a natural way to calm a dog through thunderstorms and separation anxiety.

Ingredients

1 Lemon (juiced and zested)

1 tablespoon Culinary Lavender

2 cups Whole Wheat Flour

Weekly Drool Recipe: Boo-sotto, Risotto Dinner For Your Pooch & You

Best Bully Sticks brings something special to the table this week: Boo-sotto, a risotto dinner for your pooch.  Boo-sotto is a recipe from Rachael Ray, who created this tasty dish for her aging dog, Boo.

As Boo got older, she needed a careful balance of meat and carbs; lean protein and a large amount of carbs.”

Rachael and her mom would make this for Boo and even enjoy some themselves! Your pup doesn’t have to be the refined type to enjoy this fancy dinner and neither do you. This meal would be great for your dog’s birthday, adoption anniversary or a holiday meal. Weekly Drool Recipe: K-9 Ingredient Meatballs!

What dog doesn’t love a good ball?  A ball toss around the yard is sure to please any pup, but this week Best Bully Sticks shares with readers how to toss up a different kind of good time for your dog.  Meatballs! This week’s Drool Recipe is chocked-full of yummy bits that are drool-worthy and not to mention healthy for your dog.

K-9 Ingredient Meatballs

1/2 pound ground beef

1/2 cup cooked brown rice

1 carrot, shredded

1 stalk celery, finely chopped

1/2 cup frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained

2 tablespoons chopped flat leaf parsley

2 tablespoons Parmigiano Reggiano cheese

1 large egg

2 teaspoons ground turmeric

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Grease a muffin pan or a baking sheet. 

2. In a medium bowl, combine all of the ingredients and mix well. Fill each muffin tin with about 1/4 cup of the mixture, or form the mixture into 10 balls and place on the baking sheet. 

3. Bake about 15 minutes to ensure the meatballs are cooked through. Let cool completely on a rack.

Recipe Note: Makes about 10-12 meatballs

Weekly Drool Recipe – Chicken & Cheese Doggie Breakfast Biscuits

Saturday mornings mean a few things such as sleeping in, watching cartoons or doing yard work around the house, but the best part may the warm biscuits out of the oven.  A biscuit is one of the best comfort foods that will always be reminiscent of home and family.  Since your dog is just very much a part of your family, don’t leave him out on your next Saturday morning breakfast.  These easy Chicken & Cheese Biscuits will surely win you some Saturday afternoon snuggle time with your favorite pup.

Ingredients:

2 Cups of Bisquick

1 Cup Pre-cooked chopped chicken

1 Cup Low fat shredded cheddar cheese

1 1/2 Cups Water

 

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Combine all ingredients in medium sized bowl (Mixing dough for approximately  3 minutes will ensure all ingredients were mixed well.)  Dough will be sticky.

4. Form dough into balls and place onto well greased cookie sheet. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.

 

 

Weekly Drool Recipe – Paw Print Treats

Best Bully Sticks knows these homemade biscuits are sure to make an impression.  Packed full of chicken flavor, these adorable treats are great for everyday pup snacks or a puppy play date. We think you’ll have as much fun making them as your dog loves eating them!

Ingredients:

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for surface

1/2 cup wheat germ

1/2 cup brewer’s yeast

2 teaspoons salt

3 tablespoons canola oil

1 1/2 cups homemade or store-bought low-sodium chicken stock

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment.

2. Combine flour, wheat germ, brewer’s yeast, and salt in a large bowl. Pour canola oil in a large bowl. Add flour mixture to oil in 3 increments, alternating with 1 cup stock; mix until combined.

3. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface for 2 minutes (dough will be sticky). Roll out dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut out rounds using a 2-inch fluted cutter (bakedeco.com). Transfer to baking sheets.

4. Make an indentation toward the bottom of 1 circle using your thumb, then press dough to make an arch of 4 small circles on top of the thumbprint using the tip of your pinky. Repeat with remaining rounds. Freeze for 15 minutes.

5. Bake for 20 minutes, rotating sheets and lightly brushing with remaining 1/2 cup chicken stock halfway through. Turn oven off, and let stand in oven for 40 minutes.

Makes about 2 dozen

Recipe Tip:

Dog treats can be stored at room temperature for up to 1 month.

Weekly Drool Recipe – Bacon Biscotti

This week’s Best Bully Sticks Weekly Drool Recipe will have your dog barking for more! A hearty winter treat, these Bacon Biscotti are easy to make and are packed full of real bacon. These biscotti also make great gifts or a crunchy contribution to a puppy party or play date.

Bacon Biscotti (for Dogs!)

6 slices bacon, chopped
canola or olive oil (optional)
1 1/2 cups (375 mL) flour
1 1/2 cups (375 mL) whole wheat flour
1 cup (250 mL) oats
1 tsp. (5 mL) baking powder
1/2 cup (125 mL) water
2 large eggs
1/4 cup (60 mL) bacon drippings or canola oil

Weekly Drool Recipe: Pizza With Carrots

At BBS, we believe any good casual party starts with a big, floppy piece of pizza.  A cheese pizza with veggies on top of a crispy crust and savory sauce… sounds good, right?  Well, this pizza isn’t for you, it’s for Fido.  Make this hearty pizza for your next neighborhood puppy play-date or party and you’ll easily be the coolest doggie mommy or daddy on the block.

Pizza with Carrots

Crust

3 cups organic whole wheat flour

1 cup organic uncooked oats

2 tbs organic margarine or shortening

1 organic egg, beaten

1 cup water

1/2 cup organic pizza/pasta sauce

Toppings

Olive Oil

Garlic powder

1/3 cup organic pizza sauce

1 cup organic Parmesan

1 large carrot, shredded

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 375

2. In large mixing bowl combine flour, oats and margarine. Add beaten egg and water, and 1/2 cup pizza sauce. Mix thoroughly and then knead. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour.

3. Divide into desired-size balls and, on a floured surface, roll out into circles.  Make edge thicker for crust. Place on a greased baking sheet. Brush with olive oil, then sprinkle garlic powder over surface. Coat with remaining pizza sauce and sprinkle Parmesan and carrots on top.

4. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Let cool before serving. Store in refrigerator.

Weekly Drool Recipe: Valentine’s Day Sweet Pooch Pancakes

Here at BBS, we know you love your dog. And what’s not to love? Your dog is your companion, confidant and cuddle-bug.  Love-day is right around the corner, so why not spoil your favorite little fuzzy face this Valentine’s Day? This recipe is chock-full of good stuff your dog will go nuts over–fruit, yogurt and more!  If it’s physically possible for your dog to love you more, it’s might just happen after these doggie-licious pancakes.

Valentine’s Day Sweet Pooch Pancakes

2 large eggs

1 cup milk

1 1/2 tbs butter, melted (or vegetable oil)

1 tbs honey

1 cup whole wheat flour

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Cooking spray

2 cups sliced banana, berries and mango

1 cup plain yogurt

Directions

1. Preheat a griddle or large nonstick skillet over medium heat.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, butter and honey. Gently whisk in the two flours, the baking powder and cinnamon.

3. Spray the griddle with cooking spray.

4. Drop the batter, 2 tablespoons at a time, onto the greased griddle. Cook until bubbles begin to form and break, about 3 minutes.

5. Press a few pieces of fruit into each pancake, then flip and cook until brown on the bottom, about two minutes.

6. Drizzle with yogurt and top with the remaining fruit.

Weekly Drool Recipe: Peanut Butter Delight Cake

Make your dog’s next birthday or adoption anniversary extra special with a cake just for them! This cake is chock-full of every dogs favorite flavor: peanut butter. Your dog will know it’s a special occasion with this doggie decadent cake just for them. (The recipe suggests half a cake is a good serving size.) 

Peanut Butter Delight Cake

1 cup white or whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup shredded carrots
1 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup honey
1 egg

 

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C)

2. Mix together flour and baking soda. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour into a ring mold sprayed with a nonstick spray for 40 minutes.

3. Frost this cake with low fat cottage cheese and decorate with carrot pieces. Store in refrigerator.

Weekly Drool Recipe: Oatmeal with ‘Nanas and PB

Oatmeal with 'Nanas and PBFeed your dog the breakfast of champions…no we are not talking about Wheaties! A healthy and hearty bowl of oatmeal is a great source of fiber and the perfect grain for dogs with allergies. What makes your dog go crazy for this recipe is the banana’s and peanut butter. Go ahead dish up!

Ingredients:

2 single-serving packets of plain instant oatmeal
2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
1/2 banana, chopped
1/2 cup plain yogurt
2 tablespoons honey

Serves 2

Directions:

Prepare the oatmeal in a bowl according to package instructions. While it’s hot, stir in the peanut butter and banana. Top with the yogurt, then drizzle with the honey.
