We always love getting emails from our customers & readers asking us to feature their dog or favorite breed for our Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed blog series every Thursday. As always we are honored to oblige. Thanks Monica for submitting your good looking pack of Shiloh Shepherds to be featured in our series.

So give a huge bark of applause to therapy dogs Ty, Kodiak & Bailey. The gang is looking spiffy in their Therapy Dog International Bandanas. They all work at a local residential home for troubled boys.

Shilohs from left to right are: Ty, Kodiak & Bailey

Height: 28 – 30 inches

Weight: Male: 140-160 lbs; Female: 100-120 lbs

Coat: The Shiloh Shepherd comes in two varieties, smooth coat and plush. The smooth coated variety has a thick double coat, with harsh outer hair protecting the undercoat, while the plush coat has a dense undercoat and somewhat of a mane.

Color: Common Shiloh Shepherd colors are solid black, white, red, silver, dark brown, black sable, golden, golden tan, reddish tan, black and tan etc.

Appearance: The slow and steady Shiloh Shepherd dogs, resembling German Shepherds, are characterized by a powerful and athletic build. The muzzle is black in colors and is not too long, narrow or snippy. The eyes are dark to light brown in color. The ears are triangular in shape and carried erect when the dog is attentive. The back is strong and the legs are well muscled. These dogs tend to have s smooth and rhythmic with long strides.

Temperament: Shiloh Shepherd temperament is easy going, calm, friendly, outgoing, trustworthy, protective, courageous, intelligent and highly affectionate. These dogs are neither excessively aggressive nor overly shy. As they can be dominating or stubborn at times, it is essential to train and socialize them right from the beginning.

They are generally good with kids but because of the massive size, these dogs need to be supervised around small children. When properly introduced, Shiloh Shepherd dogs tend to get along well with other pets in the house. These alert and intelligent dogs make for excellent watchdogs.

Health: Shiloh Shepherds have an average life span of 9–14 years, slightly longer than the German Shepherd breed.  Some common health problems in Shiloh Shepherd dogs are Epilepsy, Osteochondritis, Panosteitis, Small Intestine Overgrowth Syndrome, Bloating and similar other dog diseases. Though this breed is large in size still, Hip Dysplasia is less common in these dogs as compared to German Shepherds.
