Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: Celebrating Our Firehouse Mascots the Dalmatian!

dalmatian-dog

Height: 19-23″ tall

Weight: 45-65lbs

Coat: The Dalmatian coat is spotty, short, fine, and dense. Dalmatians shed considerably, and shed year-round.

Color: Dalmatian puppies are born white, and their spots come in gradually over the period of a 2 weeks and 6 months. The most common colors for Dalmatians are black or liver spotted on a white background.

Appearance: Most people know a Dalmatian right away because of his distinctive spotty coat. The Dalmatian breed of dog is a well-muscled, mid-sized, elegant dog with excellent endurance. The Dalmatian is one of the most distinctive-looking dog breeds. It’s not simply his appealing coat with its clearly-defined round spots of black or liver standing out boldly against a pure-white background; his clean limbs, normal balance, well-proportioned, muscular body, and beautifully tapered tail all contribute to an eye-catching dog.

Temperament: The Dalmatian is an alert, active, and confident dog with plenty of energy and excellent skills when it comes to problem solving and obedience. Courageous, friendly, and outgoing, the Dalmatian is a dog that tends to bond closely with his owners, making him a great family pet. Although he can be very strong willed, which may make him better suited to owners with some degree of experience in handling and training dogs. These dignified dogs love a wide range of activities, and are sociable and dependable, but owners will need to provide plenty in terms of physical activity as well as mental stimulation, otherwise these dogs can get bored and this can lead to destructive behavior.

You should ensure that you socialize your Dalmatian early on to aid a more stable temperament, as some lines can be aggressive. However, the Dalmatian tends to get on okay with children when raised with them, and will usually get on well with other pets – again early socialization is recommended. When it comes to strangers the reaction can depend on the individual personality of the dog, and can range from warm and friendly to reserved and polite. The Dalmatian is a protective dog, and this helps to make him quite an effective watchdog. The Dalmatian can be difficult to handle and manage unless you have the confidence, assertiveness, and experience to ensure he is properly trained.

Health: The life expectancy of the Dalmatian is around 11-14 years, and this breed has a range of health issues and disorders linked to it. This includes glaucoma, deafness, diabetes, gall stones, allergies, and seizures.

Famous Dalmatians:

101-dalmatians-1Pongo, Perdita, and the puppies of the 1961 Disney animated classic 101 Dalmatians, The movie was remade as a live-action film in 1996; the remake was followed by a sequel, 102 Dalmatians, in 2000.

Guest Post: Why Your Dog May Be Your Answer to the Recession by DogTipper.com

We always enjoy coming across barkworthy reads. Husband and wife team, Paris Permenter & John Bigley the grrreat masterminds behind DogTipper.com, an online site chalk full of tips & advice for dog lovers, wrote a wonderful article titled “Why Your Dog May Be Your Answer to the Recession”. This article put a huge smile on our face and a wag in Sushi & Espy tail. If you are like us, then  you’ve probably watched your spending habits drop and stress levels skyrocket. We have found that the only thing recession proof is the unconditional love of our furry companions. If you love your pets as much as we do, then you will understand why our pugs and spokesdogs Sushi & Espy have been our life preservers during our lowest times. Dogs are our saving grace & keep us smiling during these tough times and are truly worthy of the title “man’s best friend”. This is a sure must read.

Why Your Dog May Be Your Answer to the Recession by DogTipper.com

dog_best_friendTough economic times can impact your life in ways that range from stress to budget cutbacks to lack of social interaction. A dog, though, can be man’s best friend when it comes to recessionary times.

As stress levels rise and spending power diminishes in today’s tough economic times, dog owners are finding that when the going gets tough, the tough go play with their dogs. While there’s no denying that dogs come with fixed costs ranging from food to vet care, your dog can also be your best friend during an economic downturn. Here are nine ways Rover just might be your answer to the recession:

1. He’s a Good Reason to Stay Home. Staying home—rather then heading out and spending money—is never more appealing than when there’s a four-legged friend waiting for you. Suddenly there’s a good reason to dine at home or to choose an afternoon at the dog park rather than the shopping mall.

2. He’s a Great Exercise Partner. Need to save money by cutting back on a fitness club membership? No problem. You’ll never have a more dedicated personal trainer you’re your dog who will remind you—and remind you, and remind you—that it is time to get out and exercise.

3. He Loves Day Trips. Can’t afford that week at a Caribbean resort? Fido’s happy you’re staying home and considering taking him on a day trip to the lake or local park.

4. He Doesn’t Mind Cutbacks. OK, you might not want to opt for a home haircut yourself, but your dog doesn’t mind if you cut out the groomer and just give him a trim yourself.

5. He’s Happy with Used Items. Do the kids want the latest toys in the stores? You won’t have that same pressure from your dog. He’s happy with used toys from garage sales and thrift stores, perfect for playing fetch or romping around the yard.

6. He’s a Great Stress Reliever. Economic problems cause stress, there’s no doubt about it. But it’s a proven fact that dogs are an excellent stress reliever and also do wonders to lower high blood pressure. One look in those big eyes and it’s easy to see why.

7. He’ll Help You Get Out and About. Whether you’ve lost your job and no longer see your usual crowd of people or you’ve just cut back on social events, economic difficulties can mean less social interaction. Your dog, by encouraging you to get out and walk or to play in dog parks, helps you to interact with people with similar interests.

8. He Makes You Feel Like a King. A beleaguered bank account or a pink slip can leave you feeling worthless. All you have to do, though, is look in your dog’s eyes and you know that you’re the best there is. You are the center of his world.

9. He Knows the Best Things in Life are Free. Your dog values your companionship more than anything in the world. Money doesn’t mean a thing to him but you do. There’s no greater gift you can give your dog than your own time.

What ways have your pet helped you cope through the recession? Leave a comment below!

Brrrr..Cold Winter Paw Care for Your Dog : 101 Dog Care Tips- Tip 29

dogsnowIf you haven’t already realized dogs love to play in the snow. But when the mercury drops,  the bitter cold and  snowy winter months can take a huge toil causing chapping and cracking of your dog’s paws & pads. As loving pet owners it is important to be aware & beware of the dangers that snow and cold weather present to our pets paws. Making dog paw care a top priority will save your dog a lot of paw-ache, pain & trouble.  Here are some winter paw care pet tips to minimize pain and discomfort while keeping your pups paws healthy.

1. These Booties Are Made for Walking! Grit, salt & ice melting granulates & chemicals from sidewalks and streets can be very troublesome to your pet. The salt can irritate their pads and cause painful cracking. So, introducing a pair of booties into your dogs wardrobe will protect your dog’s feet from salt, chemical de-icers and grit. As well as lower your pets risk of getting hypothermia by helping to retain body heat.

If you and your dog are not keen on the idea of booties be sure to rinse and dry your pet’s feet after being outside in snow and icy conditions. Often times your pet will lick their paws when they are wet or to sooth irritation, leading to ingestion of these toxic substances. Instead opt for a non toxic & pet friendly deicing solutions. Sand, gravel and non-clumping cat litters are the safest option for traction on ice and snow.

2. Apply a soothing paw balm. To prevent ice balls from forming during longer outside adventure’s, rubbing your dogs pads with a soothing paw balm or vaseline before going outside can help. Be sure to use and edible all natural balm, because dogs will lick away.

Always check your dogs paws after coming indoors to make sure paws are free from rock salt debris which can cause cracking & drying. Snow, grit and de-icing products can accumulate in these cracks and contribute to blisters, sore pads and infections. Balm should be applied after a long walk outdoors.

3. Keep Nails Trimmed. Nails that are too long can cause a considerable amount of discomfort when walking on cold, hard surfaces. Always keep your pet’s nails trimmed to a comfortable length.

4. Pave the way! We all love a shoveled walk way free of ice and snow, and so does your pet. Always give you and your pet a safe path, free from the winter elements. Sharp pieces of ice or snow can cause abrasions on the pads.

Injuries happen from stepping on items obscured by snow, sharp edges on ice, and sometimes from snow toys and implements used to remove snow. So when you are done shoveling the sidewalks & walkways make sure to put tools away.

5. Give a Warm foot bath. Wash your dog’s paws in warm water when you get home. It will warm his feet up and melt ice that has formed between his toes. Not to mention it will wash off any toxic salt or deicing chemical residue on his paws that your dog might be tempted to lick off. Salt & deicing chemicals can cause vomiting, diarrhea and death if ingested so be diligent and keep paws squeaky clean. Once paws are cleaned apply a soothing paw balm.

6. First Aid 101: It’s a good idea to check your dog’s paws thoroughly & daily for any abrasions, cracked pads and grit stuck between his toes. Treat your dogs paw injuries promptly. If dog has a minor injury gently cleanse the wound with warm water and a mild soap, and apply pressure to stop bleeding. Paw pads are very thick and slow to heal; deep cuts to the paw pads usually require sutures for proper healing and will require vet assistance.

7. Trim Fur between the pads. Compacted snow, grit and salt on the bottom of your dog’s paws or your boots can make walking difficult, and affect you and your dogs  ability to stay on your feet. Snowy slush is attracted to your dogs fur. Keeping the fur between pads trimmed will reduce the amount of slush that clings to their vulnerable paws and prevent your pup from slipping and sliding on the sidewalks.

Ferociously delicious & all natural, the way nature intended!

Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: Cheers for the Alaskan Malamute!

Malamute Ronaldo at 2009 KKC Dogshow (pic by snoangels)

Malamute Ronaldo at 2009 KKC Dogshow (pic by snoangels)

Height: Male: 24-27 inches tall, Female: 22-24 inches tall

Weight: Male: 80-95 lb., Female: 70-85 lb.

Coat: The Malamute has a thick, coarse guard coat, never long and soft. The undercoat is dense, from one to two inches in depth, oily and woolly. The coarse guard coat varies in length as does the undercoat. The coat is relatively short to medium along the sides of the body, with the length of the coat increasing around the shoulders and neck, down the back, over the rump, and in the breeching and plume. Malamutes usually have a shorter and less dense coat during the summer months. The Malamute is shown naturally. Trimming should only be done to show a clean cut appearance of feet.

Color: Various color combinations- gray and white, sable and white, black and white, red and white, or solid white. Blue and white (slate gray with gray pigment) also is seen in the breed.  The face of the Malamute has distinguishing facial marks to include a cap over the head and a face that is 100% white or with a mask and/or bar.

Appearance: The Alaskan Malamute, one of the oldest Arctic sled dogs, is a powerful and substantially built dog with a deep chest and strong, well-muscled body. The Malamute stands well over the pads, and this stance gives the appearance of much activity and a proud carriage, with head erect and eyes alert showing interest and curiosity. The head is broad. Ears are triangular and erect when alerted. There eyes are almond-shaped and are always brown. The muzzle is bulky, only slight diminishing in width from root to nose. The muzzle is not pointed or long, yet not stubby. The coat is thick with a coarse guard coat of sufficient length to protect a woolly undercoat. Malamutes are of various colors. Face markings are a distinguishing feature. These consist of a cap over the head, the face either all white or marked with a bar and/or mask. The tail is well furred, carried over the back, and has the appearance of a waving plume. The Malamute must be a heavy boned dog with sound legs, good feet, deep chest and powerful shoulders, and have all of the other physical attributes necessary for the efficient performance of his job. The gait must be steady, balanced, tireless and totally efficient.

Temperament: Although the Alaskan Malamute can look imposing, it is actually a gentle breed. Showing great affection to its master, this breed is often said to be a one-person dog. However, the Alaskan Malamute is also playful while knowing his place within the home. While the Malamute is still used in many Artic regions for hunting, hauling, and sledding, you will find them kept as companions around the world.

What you will discover with the Alaskan Malamute is a graceful yet powerful dog. This breed is good natured, friendly, and generally great with children. Although the Alaskan Malamute is strong-willed, it is also an intelligent and easy to train dog. The only thing to be aware of is that sometimes, this breed will show aggressive tendencies toward other pets and animals to include livestock. Remember, the Alaskan Malamute is a pack animal, meaning it typically likes to lead. Therefore, you will need to make sure it knows who the boss is.

The majority of Malamutes are also fairly quiet dogs, seldom barking like most other dog breeds. When it does vocalize, more often than not they tend to “talk” by vocalizing a “woo woo” sound (the characteristic vocalizations of Chewbacca in the Star Wars films are based upon a Malamute named Indiana once owned by George Lucas). They may also howl like wolves or coyotes.

Health: The life expectancy of the Alaskan Malamute is 10-12 years. The most commonly reported health problems of Alaskan Malamutes  are musculoskeletal (tendon injury, patellar luxation, fracture, arthritis, cruciate ligament rupture, hip dysplasia), dermatological (dermatitis, interdigital cysts, hair loss, fading nose pigment), and reproductive disorders.

Other health issues in Malamutes include inherited polyneuropathy, chondrodysplasia, and eye problems (particularly cataract and progressive retinal atrophy).
